Project Description

The restaurant occupying the ground floor of the subject property is proposing to expand to the second floor with the addition of a lounge and bar with seated dining. the live load is currently noted as 3.6 KPa on original base building drawings; the new live load must be increased to 4.8 KPa per current OBC requirements for dining areas. Structural analysis of the slab results in negative bending moments over columns to be in excess of the capacity provided from rebar specified in the original framing plans. As such, reinforcement is being proposed on the top surface of the second-floor slab in such a way as to not add additional deadload to the structure, further increasing the demand. The FRP reinforcement provided has been designed as secondary reinforcement and is not required for structural integrity of the slab under fire case loading. CSA S806-12 requires that the existing structure be able to support the servicelevel loads without the FRP and NBCC accidental fire load cases have been considered in the review of the existing slab reinforcement. Since the FRP is being neglected as structural reinforcement during a fire event, it would be considered as a floor finish during this period. Part 3 of the Ontario building code [3.1.5.10 o. reg. 163/24] allows for the use of combustible floor covering to be used in a non-combustible construction. The FRP Strengthening will have a protective coating installed meeting CAN/ULC-S102 to limit flame spread and smoke development.
