Project Description

This alternative solution has been prepared to support the proposed design of the unenclosed communication stair that will be located between the 3rd and 4th floors of the building. Notably, the size of the floor opening for the stair will be more than 10 m2 but not more than 20 m2. Under OBC Sentence 3.2.8.2.(5), the size of a floor opening permitted for a stair, escalator or moving walk between floor areas without being protected in conformance with the requirements ofOBC Articles 3.2.8.3. to 3.2.8.11. is limited to 10 m2, and as such, the proposed stair exceeds the limits permitted by this Sentence. This alternative solution is proposed to outline that the increased stair opening will not compromise the life safety of occupants within these floors by demonstrating that the design will satisfy the objectives and functional statements associated with OBC Sentence 3.2.8.2.(5), therefore not requiring the floor areas be protected in conformance with the requirements of OBC Articles 3.2.8.3. to 3.2.8.11.
