Building Permit

Project Description
A portion of the proposed work involves the construction of a barbecue area (BBQ Yard) including the installation of several pieces of cooking equipment (smokers). Due to the nature of the cooking process for this equipment, they are considered as solid fuel-fired appliances and pose as a potential fire exposure hazard. With the installation of the barbecue area, the exterior portion of egress from the existing stairwell to the public thoroughfare, is being deemed as an exterior passageway under 3.4.4.3. Therefore, it is being requested that a fire separation/protection be provided from the subject path of travel to the adjacent barbecue area and fire hazard contained within. Installation of any conventional fire-rated wall assemblies in this case is difficult, if not unfeasible, given the exterior exposure condition. In lieu of providing the fire-rated wall assembly the following Alternative Solution is being proposed: Negate the existing exterior door in the stairwell as the exit door. Instead, extend the means of egress from the stair through the main floor restaurant area to the existing exterior exit door at the north-west comer. In order to mitigate any hazard from the increase in travel distance and exposure to the main floor fire compartment, it is proposed that a fire alarm system (not originally required), be installed.
