Project Description
Division B, Table 7.2.11.2 of OBC 2012, lists Copper as the acceptable material for potable water piping. This proposal is to use the Stainless Steel Schedule 40 type 304/304L pipe utilizing welded stainless steel fitting for the 100mm(4") in diameter and larger potable water piping in the building. All potable water pipes smaller than 100mm(4") will be Copper type L. AWWA C220 states that Stainless Steel "offers low corrosion rates, which makes it suitable for the handling of potable water while maintain water purity and quality". Stainless steel is also known for its superior strength compared to Type L copper piping and thus is widely used in food processing industry as well as pharmaceutical industry. Other municipalities in Ontario as well as City of Toronto (Commission Ruling, Application # B¿2012¿12) have also approved such installations in the past. In addition, there is also a Proposed Change to the 2012 Building code under review that will allow use of Stainless Steel pipe and fittings in plumbing system (change Number B¿07¿02¿07).
