Project Description
This Alternative Solution proposes the installation of fire hose connections in the exit stairs at the main floor landings in lieu of hose stations in the corridors located within 5 m of the exits stairs. The inherent features of this design takes into consideration the provision of a safe staging area to commence firefighting with the 65 mm hose connections at the main floor landings in the exit stairs, rather than using fire hose connections on another floor level. The proposed approach is consistent with NBC Division B requirement for the standpipe system to meet NFPA 14, and eliminates the need to run hoses through the exit stair from the floor level below, and reduces the number of doors to the exit stair that may be propped open during firefighting operations. The inherent building features combined with the proposed design of the standpipe system will not adversely impact Fire Department operations and allows for consistent and unhindered access to hose connections. In addition, a safe staging area is provided for firefighters that is consistent with the performance level required by the OBC.This approach is applied in jurisdictions across Canada where the NBC is adopted or amended, and is also applied within federally regulated buildings across Canada including in Ontario. As such, responding fire departments have familiarity with the proposed arrangement without requiring building specific knowledge, specialized training, or specialized tactics. The proposed Alternative Solution therefore is considered to provide a performance level that is at least equal to the performance level provided by the requirements prescribed in OBC Division B Article 3.2.9.4 and as such is compliant with the Ontario Building Code as stated in Division A Clause 1.2.1.1.(1)(b).(See attached report)
