Project Description

It is proposed to provide 65 mm standpipe system hose valve connections in general conformance with the 2015 National Building Code (NBC) and, where referenced by the NBC, the 2013 Edition of NFPA 14 ¿Standard for the Installation of Standpipe and Hose Systems¿. These 65 mm hose connections will be provided in lieu of the hose stations (38 mm and 65 mm valves, 38 mm hose and nozzle) required by the 2012 Ontario Building Code.Following this approach in this fully sprinklered building, 65 mm standpipe hose connections will be installed in each of the required exit stair shafts per NBC Articles 3.2.5.8 to 3.2.5.11 (see Attachment A). This approach differs from the OBC which requires fire hose stations to be installed within all floor areas and to be within 5 m of exits on storeys other than the ground floor (OBC Subsection 3.2.9.)Note that while the NBC and NFPA 14 allow for greater hose coverage than the OBC, as with other approved ASP¿s, it is proposed to maintain the OBC coverage requirements which will require all portions of the floor areas to be within 3 m of a nozzle attached to a maximum 30 m long 38 mm diameter fire hose. Maintaining this coverage may require the installation of additional hose connections outside of the exit stairs located within rated shafts.
