Project Description
Alternative Solution for the following outlines the proposed alternative solution for the applicable Building Code requirements, relative to fire protection and life safety, for the Finch-Kennedy SmartTrack Station of the GO Expansion program, located in Toronto, ON.Specifically, the purpose of this report is to address the application of the Ontario Building Code regarding the dead-end conditions exceeding 25 m at the ends of the passenger rail platforms. It will be demonstrated that the level of life safety and fire protection provided for the Project will meet or exceed the intent of the applicable code requirements of the Ontario Building Code.Occupants will be provided with two means of egress from the platforms level via the Station Pavilion buildings. In addition, the East Platform will be served by a pedestrian sidewalk/access and the West Platform will be provided with emergency egress to the service road serving the Northwest Station Pavilion building. However, dead-end conditions will occur on the ends of the platforms, with a common path of travel of up to approximately 228 m. As passengers are not able to evacuate off the ends of the platforms to track level, an alternative approach to evaluating the common path of travel on the GO Platform Level is proposed.
